In Article 2 of the contract the winning contractor states that "it is fully aware of the current state of the site, of modifications undertaken and work carried out (by IMPREGILO) and that this state does not prejudice the regular performance of the work set out in the contract, and thereby takes delivery of the work without reservation and in its current state".
HOLZMANN undertakes to accept the work carried out by IMPREGILO as its own, "subject to certain adaptations and modifications to its project, to be specified in detail in a special amendment to be approved by the City Authorities on delivery of the relevant documentation by the contractor within 150 days of the date of this contract".
Contract value: Lit. 97,080,628,585 including reduction.
Contract deadline: 840 consecutive days (from assignment of contract).
Work to be completed: 01/10/2001.
15th June
Work assigned to HOLZMANN.
Contrary to contractual terms, HOLZMANN accepts assignment of work with a reservation as regards the contractual amendment, requiring it to adapt its project to work already carried out by IMPREGILO.
The project has progressed slowly from the outset and delays have built up due to the special work set out in the contract.
Works Management issues several completion orders for all work not subject to further surveys, pending finalisation of the same.

HOLZMANN submits an updated works schedule under the terms of the contract, subject to approval of the amendment.
2nd September
Works Management announces that the entire project is running behind the schedule issued on 14/7/99.

9th December
Special permission granted by the Provincial Commander of the Fire Brigade.
14th December
Amendment approved by the Commune of Venice (building permit).
21st December
Amendment approved by the Commissioner for Reconstruction.
Approval of first survey of the amendment as required under the contract. However, contrary to its contractual obligations, HOLZMANN has not covered all aspects of the amendment. As well as adapting the project to the current state of the site, the contractual amendment also involved improvements: demolishing the pointed arches at the side of the stage as requested by theatre management to enable scenery to be moved more easily.
