Extraordinary meeting of the City Council: resolution to rebuild the theatre "as and where it stood".
6th February
Decree Law 44/96, later passed as Law N. 401 of 29/07/96:
- Lit. 20 billion grant for emergency work.
- Instigation of a special Committee and reconstruction commission, chaired by the Prefect of Venice.
6th February
Ruling by the Italian Prime Minister appointing the Prefect of Venice Commissioner for Reconstruction, with the power to take measures outside normal government budget legislation and make provision for tenders.
29th April
Decision to proceed with rebuilding work for La Fenice through a call for tenders.
27th May
Responsibility for the preliminary reconstruction project is allocated to a working group made up of experts from companies serving on the Commission, led by the Commune of Venice's Director of Public Works, Roberto Scibilia.
1st June - 31st August
Preliminary project for the new theatre produced.
2nd September
Preliminary project and call for tenders approved.
7th September
Europe-wide call for tenders announced.
Value of tender: Lit. 120,000,000,000.
Deadline: 883 consecutive days (from assignment of contract).
11th October
Ten applications for tenders are received.
5th November
The ten applicants (5 Italian, 5 European) invited to submit tenders.
